We at Treasured Spaces hope that you and your families enjoy this holiday season. It seems like yesterday we were talking about new colors and fashion for 2014 and already another year has passed us by! As we get set to ring in another New Year there are several things to look out for in 2015. Decorating in 2015 figures to have a few bold surprises and many interesting options for the discerning consumer. Here are a few things to look out for in 2015.
When it comes to colors we can only speculate until Pantone releases its color for 2015. Most decorating experts predict that color trends in 2015 will be peach and salmon inspired. Peach and salmon colors are the perfect way to add a unique twist to the look of your home. We are a big fan of repainting a home for an affordable way to redesign it and using these colors will make your home stand out. Peaches are more neutral than most people might think and work with different color combinations.
Speaking of colors a trend that figures to continue into 2015 from this year is the romanticism of the home. Bringing in vibrant floral colors that are combined with shades of greenery throughout the home will work well with neutral colored interiors. It is the perfect blend of rustic, retro and romantic that will soften even the hardest interiors.
Natural elements are expected to be in vogue in 2015, might like they were this year. Elements from Nordic lands will be especially popular so expect popular home décor to feature lots of metals, stone, wood, glass and leathers. More washed and distressed linens in beddings and sofas will also prevail in 2015.
Textures will be all the rage in 2015 as well in a very abstract way. Popular home decorating trends have been moving to different shapes forming a mosaic with many of them being geometric. Big city living is also showing signs of making its way into home décor. Smoother contours and colors with jungle hues will provide a modern appeal to any home next year. Using the elements of nature is a great way to combine the trends of textures and the modern romantic home all into one easy (and affordable) decorating project.

There are literally thousands of places out there where you can find special décor for your home for the holidays. Stores open up specifically for the holidays in malls and strip malls all over the area. Now that Halloween has passed those stores that were selling only costumes and scary décor will be filled with the signs of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
Instead of wasting your time and money on items these stores sell, this holiday season try for some DIY decorating for the holidays and include your kids. There are several fun ideas for decorating for the holidays that would be perfect to bring out the creative side in your children.
You might remember that early episode of the Simpsons where Lisa made the family’s Thanksgiving Day centerpiece. Although Bart eventually ruined it, you can revisit that idea and have your kids work on the centerpiece themselves. Gourds and paper mache provide the perfect starting points for kids. Find some kid friendly paint to help them touch up the centerpiece. It will be the perfect conversation starter when the family gathers for the big meal.
For Christmas arts and crafts are big fun for kids. There are several options to have your kids design the perfect holiday décor for your home for Christmas. You can have them create their own ornaments with something as simple as a few markers, white cardboard, and ribbon. You can even have the kids design their own stockings. Use an old white sock (cleaned of course) and let the kids decorate it however they wish. You can find more traditional blank stockings at craft stores.
You can give your kids their very own Christmas trees to decorate as well. Find a few mini trees and let the kids decorate the trees using foil, cotton balls, paper ornaments and whatever you might have around the house. If you have old Christmas cards let your kids cut out portions of the cards in different shapes to use as ornaments. You can also have the kids make paper snowflakes for their personalized trees (or to hang throughout the house on windows) out of white computer paper and a few creative cuts with kid-approved scissors. You can Google different ways to make snowflakes. Display the kids trees in their rooms or throughout the house.

The official start of fall has come and gone however most people don’t start to think about decorating for the fall until later in the season. Usually typical fall decorating revolves around Halloween and Thanksgiving. While those are both wonderful holidays there are lots of different, unique ways that you can incorporate fall colors into your décor for the entire season, not just for a few weeks at a time.
Combining different fall colors into the textures of your home decorating can really make a big difference in your home. The combination of browns, teals, grays and other fall colors can work for even people who aren’t a fan of traditional fall colors. Use orange and brown slip covers on pillows to accent on a white or gray couch for an instant pop of color. Use a rug with different fall colors in your living room for an extra dimension.
Yellows are traditionally thought of as spring and summer shades however yellow works great with fall colors as well. Combining yellows with browns and oranges will help bring the traditional look of the changing leaves outdoors inside your home. Dark browns are easy to decorate with. You can find an abundance of furniture with shades of dark brown to use in your home during fall.
If you’re thinking of using fall colors to paint your home, but you want something that will last all year long think about burnt red. Burnt red is a color that works great with cremes and mossy greens and it is a versatile color that screams fall but works just as well the rest of the year. Painting will get you in the mood for fall and using burnt red means you won’t have to update the look to your home anytime soon.
Patterns are another great option for using fall colors in your home decorating. Earthy accents that are combined with fabrics (like drapes in the living room or your bedspread) is an eye-catching way to add the colors of this changing season to your home. Patterns will create a cozy feel for your home and will welcome your guests into a relaxing environment.
At Treasured Spaces we are here to help with your fall decorating. If you’re on a budget we can show you how to use what you already own to create the perfect look for your home this fall. For more information please follow us on Twitter.MORE >>

Summer is in full force in Des Moines and if you want to decorate your home but you’re on a tight budget we at Treasured Spaces are here to help! For several years now Shelly has been working with clients on interior redesign projects, or using what you already own to decorate your home. Repurposing is a great way to take something you already own and create a whole new use for it. Plus repurposing is always good for the environment. For the summer months there are lots of things you can do to decorate your home using what you already own.
If you have a home garden you can give it a new look. So many things can be used to plant that the options are almost endless. Many people like to use old pales to plant hanging baskets. You can even plant flowers in old boots and hang them outside on a fence. If you have an old chest that has been stored in the attic for years, bring it out, give it a fresh coat of paint and remove the top to create the perfect flower bed. You can do something similar on a smaller scale with an old tool box. For larger projects use an old bathtub to create a pop of color in your yard.
Many families like to display their summer vacation photos but don’t worry about going to the store and buying a bunch of new picture frames. Instead take an old headboard from a no-longer used bedroom set and trip where needed. Fit in a piece of glass or plastic behind it, fill it in with your favorite photos and cover the front with plastic or glass. Headboards can be used for other things like hanging up rain coats or other household items, a creative family message board, or as a magnetic display.
Old glass mason jars have a lot of different uses in the summer. They can be used to store spices, pastas and other food items to increase shelf life. You can also use old jars to put candles in to display inside or on an outdoor patio. You can research online to find free vintage labels you can print and use on the jars for some extra creativity.

Being cost-effective with your home decorating doesn’t mean you have to settle. You can still have a beautiful and elegant look in your home without spending a lot of cash. As urban sprawl has led to gated communities, all with the same or similar styled homes, there is a strong desire to return to home interiors that are unique, as a sign of affluence and personality. With a few simple ideas you can have all the looks of glam for your home on a tight budget.
One affordable way to add style to your home is with crown molding. The lack of crown molding can create a “blah” look to your home because the lack of detail will give them home an unfinished look. Crown molding applied to the walls can add to the richness of any room in your home and it is relatively inexpensive. When you pick out crown molding remember that the wider the trim, the more elegant your home will look.
Another affordable way to add elegance to your home is shop around for elegant rugs. You can find inexpensive and stylish rugs that will add texture to your home on discount websites like Overstock. You can also check Craigslist or local flea markets for stylish rugs being sold for a fraction of the cost. Using rugs in your home is especially important if you have a house with hardwood floors, to add a little softness.
Elegant lighting fixtures can be some of the most over-priced aspects to accessorizing your home. The good news is you can find duplicates of expensive fixtures for much less. Lighting fixtures that cost $400 likely have a lower-priced cousin at a store for around $40. Elegance is all about the design so find the perfect design for your home and then research to find its inexpensive alternative.
Because furniture is usually the largest investment in any room in your home it’s even more important to be vigilant about what you want and how to find elegance at the right price. Spending money on cheap furniture is never a good investment because it will always show signs of wear and tear in no time. But investing too heavily in furniture can burn your budget in one shopping trip. Instead of the stores look for steals at consignment shops or estate sales for pieces of furniture that can be customized and reupholstered.
At Treasured Spaces we’re here to help create the perfect look for your home at a fraction of the cost. For more inspiration and information about our redesign services and for more decorating tips on a budget follow our Pinterest boards.

Summer is just around the corner and you can welcome the warmer weather with a new look for your home that brightens things up. There are many ways to freshen up your home for summer and many options are very affordable. From simple to elegant, these affordable decorating ideas for the summer are both easy to do and fun for the whole family.
Plants can work in most bedroom decorating schemes and are the perfect way to add a fresh look to your home. Bring in some flowers from the outdoors to use in the bedroom or kitchen. For traditional bedrooms try a single vase of freshly cut hydrangeas. For the kitchen use fresh cut pansies or putted herbs. For planters use summer like colors or themes like bright yellows, striped patterns or clear glass.
Speaking of the bedroom adding the feel of summer can be as simple as changing up the bedspread. If you’ve been using a bulky bedspread for the chilly winter nights replace it with something lighter., such as a lightweight, brightly colored blanket or quilt.
During the summer months it’s time to let the light shine in. If you have heavy drapes remove them and let the windows show. Allowing the light to come in will brighten the home and help blur the interior and outside. You can use lighter drapes or make your own curtains from fabric you can find at the craft store. Sheer curtains are the most popular choice for most windows. For rooms with smaller windows that have little natural light think about frosted glass designs you can place inside the windows to leak the light in.
Creating the perfect outdoor oasis is essential for summer living. If you don’t have a porch or patio there are still ways you can transform the outdoors into the perfect lounging and entertaining area for you and friends or family. Whatever space you have to work with make it as homey and comfortable as possible. Avoid large, spread out situations that discourage gathering. Instead opt for outdoor furniture that encourages a cozy gathering. Longer wicker furniture can be accented with colorful throw pillows.
At Treasured Spaces we are here to help with your decorating needs no matter what time of the year. As summer approaches you can count on our experts to guide you in the right direction to make sure your home looks its best for the warmer months. Spring is finally here and it is a great time to start to think about the colors in your home. Infusing your home with different colors for the Spring is an affordable way to update your home. Changing up the colors is also a nice way to say good-bye to winter and add a bright look to your home. There are several unique and elegant color trends in Des Moines interior decorating this spring that would be perfect for any home.
Painting is always an inexpensive way to add different color to your home. Spring is filled with a lot of lovely colors, blues, purples, yellows, etc. but if you decide to paint with a color for spring make sure it is versatile enough that you don’t have to repaint each season. A neutral color (like an eggshell white) is always best for the living room as it will be able to last the entire year. For a more dramatic look think different neutrals. “New” neutrals offer a rustic look like mossy (great for a den) or charcoal (perfect for the kitchen).
If you paint and still want a touch of bold color a hot trend right now is using bold stripes. Chalkboard paint is popular but you can opt for a non-traditional color as well. Search online before you hit the paint store to see what hues may be right for your home.
If you want to go for bold colors one of Pantone’s 2014 colors, Cayenne is the perfect addition to your home. Look for ways to mildly incorporate this color, like in patterns on a bedspread. Pair this color with cremes and it will add a pop and a “wow!” factor to your home’s décor.
Another trendy color that offers a bold look is Dazzling Blue. This blue is perfect for the Spring because it can add a fresh look to any room in your home. It’s the perfect color to use in the bathroom, especially as the backdrop to a wallpaper pattern. Dazzling Blue is a great color to use with different textures like throw pillows or rugs.

If you’re decorating your home on a budget there are a number of ways to save. Skipping large remodels in favor of a simple re-painting of your home’s interior, shopping for decor at the thrift store or yard sales, or re-using items around your home are all good ideas. But did you know there are a number of options to help you decorate your home you can buy at the dollar store? Dollar store items may have a bad reputation, however there are four things that are you can find at the dollar store that are perfect for decorating your home.
1. Picture Frames
Most dollar stores sell picture frames at just $1 each. The great thing about the picture frames is there are several sizes to choose from. That means you can decorate your walls with pictures, or find smaller frames for family photos to display on top of cabinets. The picture frames that I’ve purchased at the dollar store have lasted a few years and the paint is still well in tact.
2. Seasonal Accessories
If you like to change the look of your home based on the seasons, shopping on a budget may mean some difficult decisions. But dollar stores usually have a lot of seasonal items you can purchase. If it’s Christmas you can find ornaments, small fake trees, lights and garland at the dollar store. You can also find Easter decorations, halloween candy and décor, and 4th of July sparklers.
3. Party Decorations
Speaking of seasons, there are several stores that are dedicated to only party supplies. But you can find most items that you need to celebrate a birthday or other special event at your local dollar store. Most dollar stores carry party favors, plates, and balloons for celebrations like weddings, birthdays, graduations and more. You can even find banners at the dollar store to say happy birthday or to welcome guests into your home.
4. Do it Yourself Decorating
If you have a family you may want to think about fun art projects for the kids to help decorate your home. Trust me when I say you will keep anything your kids make for the holidays to decorate your home so encourage them to help out with your decorating. You can find affordable art supplies at the dollar store to help your kids get inspiration. Kids can create picture frames, holiday posters, and other trinkets to display around the home. It’s not only affordable it’s also a great way to keep the kids busy and encourage their creativity.
You can find all assortments of candles at the dollar store. Candles are a great way to add an elegant look to your home and whether you like them big or small, scented or un-scented, the dollar store will have you covered. Plus you can buy several candles at the dollar store for the same price as one candle at the store in the mall.
At Treasured Spaces we’re committed to helping you decorate your home on a budget. We serve the entire Des Moines area and can help you plan a budget and find things around your home to decorate. We even offer consulting services and personal shopping if you don’t have the time to find what you need. For more please like us on Facebook.MORE >>

Spring is just around the corner and our Des Moines interior decorating experts are excited about new decorating trends for the warmer weather. If you want to learn the secretes of decorating your home for Spring we are here to help jump start your brain with ideas to give your home a vibrant look while saving you on expensive decorating costs.
Use What’s Fresh
If you’re looking for a way to add bright colors and freshness in your home for the Spring, an easy and inexpensive way to update the home is buy adding fresh fruit and fresh flowers. Fill a large clear vase with lemons and limes (or oranges) and add some water to freshly cut flowers to refresh any room in your home.
Go Bold with Paint
We have discussed how easy (and affordable) it is to update the look of your home with a fresh coat of paint. Many people opt for bold colors in the Spring. If you are nervous about using bold colors in your home start with the bathroom. Typically the bathroom is the smallest room in the home and it is the perfect room for bold blues for a vibrant look.
In the Bedroom, it’s the Little Things
Sometimes bold and dynamic are a bit too much. If you’re looking for affordable ways to decorate in the Spring in your bedroom the smallest touches can do great things. Update the bed with a beautiful colorful throw blanket or throw pillows with Spring colors. You can also update the shades to allow more light into the room.
Update Old Furniture
Spring is a time for renewal so give your old and outdated furniture an update. Add a new coat of paint to a table or add a cloth to an old chair for a brand new look. For a quick weekend project you can also refinish old wood tables and chairs that have been stained or worn out.
Another great cost-saving way to decorate for the Spring is to update accents. Rather than buying new furniture add some throw pillows to a sofa, or a new lamp shade to a lamp. Incorporate bright Spring colors into your accents and it will give your home a million dollar look without breaking the bank.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and if you’re planning on giving your sweetheart roses or a surprise at home there are almost unlimited choices to creating a romantic look for your home. Valentine’s Day is the bright spot in what has been a difficult winter in our area and around the country. The good news is decorating for Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. There are several simple steps to a romantic and elegant Valentine’s Day for your home.
One of the more popular choices for Valentine’s Day gifts are roses. Roses are an attractive option for gifts but they can also add a lot of color to a home that might be lacking it in the winter. The most affordable, and an option that will show you put a lot of care into your gift will be buying separate roses and arrange them yourself.
If time is a factor look for arrangements with different colors. Reds, pinks and whites look great in a glass vase. If you have a cottage style home look for flowers with cabbage like rose blossoms and tiny spray roses. For more elegance use long stem hybrid-tea roses. You can also go beyond traditional arrangements by adding single flowers in different colors in small bud vases to display as an arrangement. You can also look for tulip bouquets, mix different flower styles, or other flower arrangements.
For an extra special touch be sure to add a homemade mini Valentine’s card into your arrangement. Keep the card in place at the top of the arrangement by using a florist’s card holder. If you’re buying an arrangement or flowers at a florist shop be sure to ask for one. For an extra romantic feel tuck cards into different arrangements around your home. The cards can form a poem or have different messages of affection.
If flowers aren’t your thing you can still create a beautiful arrangement made from candy. Fill the base of a vase with candy hearts and arrange different chocolate flowers and other larger candies at the top. You can also break with tradition and buy your loved-one a plant. Plants are a great choice if your significant other loves his or her outdoor garden. Plants are more economical and will be the gift that can keep on giving.
No matter what time of the year, Treasured Spaces is here to help with you decorating needs. We can offer our expert advice to make sure your home has the perfect look for all seasons.
