Christmas and the holiday seasons aren’t the only time to add a different look to your home in the winter. Des Moines decorating in the winter offers a number of possibilities for your home. There are several DIY options as well as more advanced projects that Treasured Spaces can help you with.
When decorating for the winter it’s important to play up the cozy factor of your home. If you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace rearrange your furniture so that they face it to create a cozy gathering spot for winter entertaining. Speaking of furniture be sure to add a few extra throw pillows and blankets to help your family keep cozy.
Candles are an inexpensive way to add a warm and cozy look to your home in the winter. You can find scented candles with scents that match the season, like pine or cookies to add an extra touch. Just don’t over do it. One scented candle per home is the general rule so make sure the old candles you light won’t try to over-power one another. Candle light is a great way relax after a stressful day at work or driving home on snowy roads.
If you have wood floors you may want to give them a touch up for the winter with a fluffy area rug for your living room’s main entertaining area. The rug will add texture and will also keep your feet warmer! You can layer thinner rugs on top of one another for an extra dimension. Playful patterns on smaller rugs will help them stand out if you have furniture with dark wood or creamy colors.
White colors in the home are popular in the winter however you can escape the winter blues by infusing your home with brighter colors. If you can’t find fresh flowers you can use silk flowers which will add a lot of color. You can also incorporate brighter pinks and blues in your throw pillows and blankets. Brightly colored décor can also extend into spring and summer so you’ll get a lot of use out of these items and save on costs decorating later in the year.

If you have a home that is a fixer-upper or if you have been in the same home for several years, it may be time for a new look. Renovating and upgrading your home once in awhile is a great idea for personal reasons as well as to increase the value of your home. Unfortunately home renovating can be an expensive prospect and many people can’t afford the cost associated with larger projects. The good news is there are several low cost options to home redesign in Des Moines to give your home a fresh look without breaking the bank.
For really low cost options you can do a lot of simple things around your home. For about $1 each you can install new switchplate covers on your electrical outlets. It may be a modest change but a new clean cover will look a lot nicer than an older yellowing cover. For a few dollars more you can find fun patterned covers to use. You can also change the look to your lighting itself with new lampshades. You can find lampshades at thrift stores or yard sales but they’re also inexpensive in the stores.
In the bathroom there are a number of low cost ways to remodel. Replacing your shower or tub will cost a lot of money but you can give it a new look by having it professionally relined. You can refinish an old tub yourself if it is made of porcelain, fiberglass or cast iron. There are several tutorials for doing this on YouTube and home remodeling websites. Don’t try to refinish other older fixtures in your bathroom as refinishing them is more expensive than buying new (unless you have a vintage sink or other item you don’t want to let go of). Another overlooked detail in the bathroom is to freshen the caulk and grout, which can help your bathroom sparkle for just a few dollars.
Going green with your home updates is great for the environment as well as your wallet. Use an old mason jar as a toothbrush holder, or use cans for your pens and pencils. You can also clean the clutter out of your home and sell or donate anything of value and recycle or repurpose the rest. Selling some of your unwanted items can help pay for larger decorating costs.
Treasured Spaces is the leading interior redesign experts in the Des Moines area. We can work with you to find affordable solutions to your home and offer several services to choose from. We can do all the work for you or come in and provide tips and ideas for you, and we can be your personal shopper! The new year is here and now that the holidays have passed many people turn their attention to their homes. Des Moines decorating and planning picks up at the start of the new year as people settle back into a normal routine and have extra cash from holiday gifts or tax refunds. If you’re planning on a decorating project for your home, there are several trendy, hot new colors for 2014 to pay attention to.
Pantone, the leading color authority has named Radiant Orchid as it’s Color of the Year for 2014. Pantone chose the color in part because it sparks the imagination and encourages creativity and originality. Independence and the creative spirit continue to increase in value in our society, so it’s no surprise Pantone chose a color to reflect that.
Radiant Orchid is an eye-catching hue that can be used in paint or accents around the home. The color will compliment darker greens and can be combined with teal, turquoise and lighter yellows and pinks. If your home needs a little livening up, Radiant Orchid works well with neutral colors without overpowering the room.
Pantone has previously listed the hot new fashion colors for Spring 2014, but there’s no reason you can’t get a quick jump on planning to incorporate the colors in your home now. The top colors are (from left to right and top to bottom on the chart) Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, Hemlock, Paloma, Sand, Freesia, Cayenne, Celosia Orange, Radiant Orchid and Dazzling Blue.
While these colors are for “fashion” don’t assume that only means clothes. Pantone’s colors usually find their way into a lot of décor and accents for your home. We’re especially excited about the Cayenne color as it offers so much versatility to home decor. It’s the perfect compliment to neutral colors and will work well in any room in your home. We also love the Celosia Orange for a more spontaneous look if you want to change the look of your home decor in the Spring.
Pantone is the leader, but not the only color authority, and many opinions exist for hot colors for this year. Other experts believe that 2014 is still going to be a strong year for greens. Neutral colors seem to always be in style and many experts say that trend will continue this year. Brown is the favorite neutral color, however gray could be poised to take over this year. Gray covers more hues, from soft gray to charcoal and goes great with metallic accents in your home.

Happy New Year from Treasured Spaces! 2014 promises to be an exciting year for Des Moines decorating! New trends include bold new colors for devices and changes to the way we think about basics like electrical-decor around the home to keep up with the needs of technology. In short our homes are becoming smarter and keeping us connected in a way never through of before. Designers are picking up on these trends and incorporating them into the hot 2014 decorating trends.
In 2014 basic home decor items will see major transformations in the new year to accommodate ever-changing needs brought on by technological advances. Outlets may not be the most thought of home décor item to trend, but that’s exactly what’s happening as USB-ready outlets are beginning to replace the standard wall plug and they’re coming with some beautiful designs and colors.
Legrand has been the leader in the evolution of the way we think about wall outlets and their décor. Their USB outlets come in all the colors you see and other various styles and combinations. These examples are just the start of a changing electrical and home design trend that should continue to evolve as the months and years progress. You can also keep in simple with a U-Socket for a more traditional option that still incorporates the need for modern sockets.
Simple wall outlets aren’t the only home-staples to see major renovations in 2014. Other popular items being revamped include refrigerators that include mini-tablets that can give you the time, temperature/weather conditions, news and allow you to check your social media all while pouring yourself a glass of water. The refrigerator, offered by Samsung, also allows you to input family photos to display.
Home entertainment will also see new evolutions in 2014. It’s already starting with Italian designer Edoardo Carlino who has created a bed that incorporates a theater screen plus connections for your PC or video game console. There’s also a new home-entertainment system offered by Lutron that will allow you to set the mood of a room. With the click of a button you can alter the lighting, music volume, and thermostat settings to pre-arranged settings that you can choose.

Interior redesign, or using what you already own to decorate your home and give it a new look is not a new concept. However during the holidays many people feel the need to purchase new items year after year when they could easily transform their home into a winter-wonderland by using what they already have around the house. Treasured Spaces has a few suggestions to help you save on your Christmas decorating this year!
If you have been looking for something simple to hang on your door to celebrate the holiday season you can make a pinecone decoration by using some fabric around your home to attach to the pinecones. You can also use fabrics to hang mistletoe, wreaths, or even to make your own Christmas ornaments. Speaking of pinecones, you can also use items from nature like pinecones as candle holders. You can even paint the pinecones and use them different times during the year.
Your old clothes can come in handy this time of the year. You can use your sowing skills to turn an old dress into a few stockings to hang by the fireplace. You can also use an old apron as your Christmas tree skirt. If you have some larger pieces of heavy fabric you don’t have a use for, find some holiday inspired cookie cutters to help you make ornaments for the tree.
The holidays are the perfect time for your creativity to shine. While mason jars make great candle holders, you can also transform them into waterless snow globes with some hot glue, fake evergreen trees and some fake snow. You can also save money (and help the environment) by skipping the wrapping paper and using festive clothes or napkins to wrap your gifts.
Sometimes your old Christmas decorations can be reused again. Christmas lights can be frustrating if they break, however don’t throw the string of lights into the garbage the minute things go awry. You can use the broken strings for crafts. Broken Christmas lights can also be used for jewelry. If you have colorful Christmas lights that no longer work you can use the dead bulbs to form a colorful Christmas wreath.
If you’re struggling with your holiday decorating Treasured Spaces is here to help! Shelly can work with you to find things around your home to use to help make your house come alive for the holiday season. Couples are often forced to compromise their tastes in the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. Those rules don’t apply in the living room however as the main space for family time, entertainment time and socializing is seeing trends that don’t have a gender bias. Contemporary living room decorating doesn’t have to break your bank account either, offering custom and personalized décor.
Desire for self expression is becoming more obvious in the living rooms across the nation. Decor in the living room has to have special meaning that make us feel comfortable and add to the uniqueness of the home. Repurposing items is a very popular decorating trend in the living room and many people are making it into an art form. Do it yourself projects are also gaining in popularity. Building your own furniture or revamping used furniture is a great way to add your own touch to the style of your living room.
Another way to repurpose is to update what you already own. Curtains can become upholstery, upholstery can become pillows, etc. Simple changes like reframing photos can do a lot to change the look of your living room in a very budget-friendly way. Repainting or buying new lamp shades are other affordable ideas.
A cottage style look is very popular for living rooms no matter if you live in the city or in the country. Large fireplaces with warm lighting and display shelves can give your living room the look and feel of a weekend get-away lodge. Use neutral colors with minimal accessories if you want to pull off this look in your home.
The cottage style look is also conducive to another growing trend for the living room: The open floor plan. Blurring lines between the living room and the dining room, or the living room and kitchen are growing in popularity to allow for more communication and easier entertaining options.
Floral patterns are also back in style especially if you use them with a white background. Floral patterns can give your living room a romantic touch and can go on the walls, in paintings or wallpapers, or used on new fabric covers. Stripes are also a very popular look for those who want less romance and more energy. Stripes don’t just have to be on the walls, they can also be included on rugs or in graphic art.

There was a time when the kitchen was the place for homemakers to get things done around the home. The kitchen was the place to prepare meals, but it was also the place to do laundry and take care of other household chores. Today’s kitchen is a far different place, a space that’s used for cooking, socializing, welcoming guests, and family time. If you’re kitchen is in need of an update there are a few trends to take advantage of to ensure you have a modern space.
When it comes to kitchen countertops stone is losing ground to countertops made from quartz. These trendy countertops are no-maintenance and almost indestructible. It’s the perfect choice for today’s busy professional families and it is also a popular choice because of its simple patterns. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry also reports that concrete countertops are a popular choice for homeowners. Concrete allows for more custom designs and the possibilities are endless for the surfaces, colors and styles to choose from.
The choices you make for cabinets for the kitchen are numerous, however white is far and above the popular trend for color. The National Kitchen and Bath Association reports the popularity of white cabinets has been on the rise over the past several years. Just two years ago 47% of consumers viewed white cabinets favorably. Today that number has increased to 67%.
Kitchen linoleum has been popular for years however for a trendy look for your kitchen consider hardwood floors. Hardwood floors can be a lot of work to install and maintain but there are low-hassle options available. You can opt for engineered wood flooring, made from a plywood base with a real hardwood veneer. This style will give you all the look of a hardwood floor without much of the hassle to maintain.
A modern and trendy kitchen should be open, warm and inviting. Energy-efficient lighting is not only good for the environment, it’s also good for providing the right kind of lighting to give your kitchen a welcoming feel. LED lighting is used by around 77% of all decorators, up from 50% just a few years ago. The kitchen should also be open. Many modern kitchens include an island area rather than a wall which provides ample opportunity for communication between rooms and a great spot for entertaining.

Des Moines decorating trends are always changing, and each room of the home has its own particular needs and style. The bedroom is our most private, intimate space. It’s the space where we relax, energize and where we feel most at peace. Des Moines decorating trends in the bedroom is a combination of old and traditional styles with a modern, minimalist touch.
More home-owners are opting for a “hotel-like” appearance in the bedroom. Trends point to higher ceilings, large walk-in closets, attached bathrooms and even fireplaces, pop-up TV cabinets and additional furniture. The bedroom is moving towards becoming a home within a home. If you love your lazy Sundays in bed you will love this style because this trend will still allow you to get plenty of your daily tasks done all from the comfort of your bedroom.
Master-bedrooms are moving towards a non-gender-specific design and self contained. Frills are out and layered textured is in. High upholstered headboards are replacing traditional wood bed frames and footboards are being eliminated. Dark hardwood floors are replacing wall to wall carpet in the bedroom. Modern bedside tables with tall lamps and dimmers are also very popular.

Looking to transform your home into the scariest house on the street this Halloween? Des Moines decorating for Halloween can be fun for the whole family. Fall is a great way to get your kids excited about Des Moines decorating and make them a part of the fun. Halloween offers several affordable options for home décor and there are a lot of do it yourself options.
One fun decorating option for the whole family is to make your own Halloween wreaths. Wreaths are great for the door or even indoors hanging above a mantle and you can make your own at home. To make an easy Halloween wreath start with a styrofoam wreath you can find at most craft stores. Have the adults hot glue orange fabric to the wreath while wrapping it around the styrofoam. You can have the kids add their own art or glue on some spiders, pumpkins, home-made paper ghosts or anything else appropriate for Halloween.
A great way to decorate indoors is with Halloween-inspired covers. Covers are an easy way to add decorations for any holiday or season and be able to remove them and store for next year. Make some simple chair or pillow covers using white and find some halloween graphics you can sow on. Use bats or fabric jack-o-lanterns or spiders.
The fireplace mantle is perfect for Halloween décor. Use your ledge to display some DIY Halloween-inspired artwork or line it with pumpkins. You can carve the pumpkins or have the kids design their own using permanent markers. You can also fill a jar with Halloween candy or some dried corn.
If you’re looking for something unique for your Halloween decorating think outside the box by making some of the photos around your home “scary” by adding black masks you can make from construction paper to make some scary “masked” home portraits. Colors and patterns get all the attention, but for a really dramatic change to the look of your home make sure to include different textures. Decor that strikes the same visual tone will create a flat look for your home. That’s where texture and utilizing texture can help. Many people consider fabrics to be the best way to add texture however there are several ways to enhance a room’s texture and add depth.
One of the main benefits to adding texture is to add dimension which appeals to our visual sense. One simple way to add texture to your floor is to include a rug. For a classic look go for layered rugs with patterns. For a modern look include shag rugs and for a romantic feel look for hand-hooked rugs.
Every room should have a focal point to start with your design. An item can become a focal point because of its size, color, shape, or anything else that helps it stand out. Make your focal point eye catching by being creative. Use a woven table in a living room or a centerpiece on your dining room table.
Remember to combine a mix of textures and don’t repeat textures. If you have pillows on your sofa of the same color make sure the patterns are different. Combine different textures like silk, linen, leather, etc. in a concentrated area to invite people to come closer and gather together. Texture works best when opposites attract.
There are several affordable ways to add texture to your home. Painting is one of the more affordable ways to change the look of your home and you can add some texture to your new paint job by adding glaze. Adding glaze to your walls will give a subtle glow when light hits it. Glaze will also reflect the natural light of the room to give it a warmer effect. The ceiling is a wall that most people forget about. Try to paint the ceiling in a lighter shade of the color that you use on your walls or go bold with a contrasting color.
When choosing colors go bold and saturated to make a strong statement. Partner these colors with sleek and smooth textures that won’t battle for attention. Look for acrylic tables, a dense rug and ceramic lamps. Go for moderation for each room. Too much texture will make a space feel cluttered and create the opposite feel of its intended effect.
