There are literally thousands of places out there where you can find special décor for your home for the holidays. Stores open up specifically for the holidays in malls and strip malls all over the area. Now that Halloween has passed those stores that were selling only costumes and scary décor will be filled with the signs of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
Instead of wasting your time and money on items these stores sell, this holiday season try for some DIY decorating for the holidays and include your kids. There are several fun ideas for decorating for the holidays that would be perfect to bring out the creative side in your children.
You might remember that early episode of the Simpsons where Lisa made the family’s Thanksgiving Day centerpiece. Although Bart eventually ruined it, you can revisit that idea and have your kids work on the centerpiece themselves. Gourds and paper mache provide the perfect starting points for kids. Find some kid friendly paint to help them touch up the centerpiece. It will be the perfect conversation starter when the family gathers for the big meal.
For Christmas arts and crafts are big fun for kids. There are several options to have your kids design the perfect holiday décor for your home for Christmas. You can have them create their own ornaments with something as simple as a few markers, white cardboard, and ribbon. You can even have the kids design their own stockings. Use an old white sock (cleaned of course) and let the kids decorate it however they wish. You can find more traditional blank stockings at craft stores.
You can give your kids their very own Christmas trees to decorate as well. Find a few mini trees and let the kids decorate the trees using foil, cotton balls, paper ornaments and whatever you might have around the house. If you have old Christmas cards let your kids cut out portions of the cards in different shapes to use as ornaments. You can also have the kids make paper snowflakes for their personalized trees (or to hang throughout the house on windows) out of white computer paper and a few creative cuts with kid-approved scissors. You can Google different ways to make snowflakes. Display the kids trees in their rooms or throughout the house.
