What is a Flex Room? 15 Ideas to Customize Space at Home

What Is a Flex Room?

Some rooms in a house can be considered “flex rooms” that can serve more than one purpose.  The room may be an unused bedroom, an extra living space, or an un-purposed basement room. You can make it a “day to day” flexible space that can serve multiple functions or you can go all-in on a special-purpose room that you customize to the max.  A flex room gives you options. Regardless of what you decide, there are many creative ways you can use this space.

15 Flex Room Ideas:

Do you do a substantial amount of work at home?  Perhaps you want to have a private place to pay your bills, work on your budget,  and do general busywork. An office can be good for a family that needs a private space to work or wants to keep the computers in a dedicated space.  While a classically styled office may have a large desk and chair at the center, a more modern aesthetic may be more minimal with simpler, more functional, and less ornate furniture.

  1. Exercise Room

If cardio is your exercise of choice, then a treadmill or exercise bike can fit the bill.  You can customize the space with padded floors, tv screens, and mirrors. Even upstairs rooms can be used for light exercise such as yoga. Good lighting and some bright colors can give the room an energetic feel.

Add a comfortable couch and one or two sofa seats and you will have everything you need.

  1. Coffee room

A space that gets lots of natural light, can be ideal for a coffee room.  A coffee table and some comfortable chairs can make for a great place to relax on a weekend morning, and enjoy reading the news.  It can flex to be a reading room or a lounge for hosting guests for drinks and appetizers.

  1. Music room

Music lovers will appreciate a space dedicated to enjoying listening to some tunes. A musician can enjoy a place to practice and play. A basement space can be ideal unless you plan on using headphones all the time.  However, if you’re looking for a space to enjoy music out loud or host a party, you can set up your stereo and music collection just about anywhere.
