Handyman Secrets – How to Make Sure Two 2 x 4’s are Flush

In another episode of Handyman secrets, Josh gives us insight on how to make sure your 2 x 4’s are flush. What does that mean? It means that they are lining up with each other and are in a nice straight line. Check out the video tutorial below:

Why does this matter

In this video, Josh is working on some framing and has two 2 x 4’s that are not flush and lining up right with each other. When working on projects like sheet-rocking where you are going to be creating a flat surface, you really want to be sure the two 2 x 4 boards are flush before they are nailed together. If they are not aligned correctly, it could cause a bow in the wall giving you a rounded and uneven wall surface. It also just makes the sheet-rocking process easier to work with because everything is flat and lines up with each other.

How you do it

When doing this, you could push and pull all you want, but there is an easier path to get the job done. Try taking a screw or nail and put it in one of the 2 x 4’s ( not quite all the way), take a hammer and put the claws (the back end) of the hammer around the screw/nail and apply pressure (like you’re trying to remove the nail) until the boards line up evenly, then nail them together. After that, take the screw/nail out and it is done.

The amount of pressure that is needed to apply for this is very minimal and can be done by just pressing with a finger. Doing this adjustment will allow your sheetrock to flow much better and keep the bows out of your wall
