What is a General Contractor?

A general contractor is a construction expert who offers every service you need to complete your project successfully. Whether you’re looking for roofing, flooring, plumbing, siding, windows or painting, general contractors take care of the vast amount of work needed to conduct new construction.

1) Large Network of Subcontractors

One of the biggest benefits of hiring a general contractor is that they have a large network of subcontractors working for them. This ultimately speeds up the project timeline. General contractors need to know how to effectively manage subcontractors to ensure that the project is completed efficiently.

2) No-Hassle Services

Another advantage of hiring a general contractor is that you won’t have to be bothered by the construction process – General contractors are responsible for managing the execution of your construction project, which includes obtaining building permits, purchasing supplies, scheduling inspections, and hiring and supervising subcontractors such as carpenters, roofers, and electricians to ensure that the job is done efficiently and to your satisfaction.

3) Insurance Coverage

When you hire a general contractor, you can rest easy knowing that your project is covered by insurance. With general liability insurance, you won’t be liable for any accidents or damages that happen on your construction site.

4) More Affordable

Choosing a general contractor means that you’ll save big on several different costly items. Any general contractors worth your money should have a large network of suppliers who provide materials at a discounted rate. General contractors become preferred sellers when they develop trusted relationships with suppliers in the industry throughout the years, which allows them to provide a lower rate.

5) Time Efficient

In a similar vein, because general contractors have built up these relationships, a perk of being a preferred seller is that they can get those materials on request. Overall, this will save you time, help you avoid delays and move your project forward quicker.

6) Singular Point of Contact

Since the general contractor oversees every aspect of your project, he’ll have a complete grasp on the scope, timeline, and budget of the project and will keep you informed throughout the entire process. Whenever you have a question, you will know exactly who to call.

7) Fully Customizable Services

The final result will be entirely unique and something you’ll be proud to call your own.

8) Promotes Feedback Throughout the Process

With the number of subcontractors and construction workers that are normally involved in a general contracting project, there’s a better chance that the foreman will receive design, building and material suggestions from other professionals, in addition to more accurate cost estimates, eliminating surprises, budget-killing expenses.

9) Generates Additional Revenue for the Homeowner

All of the cost savings that arise during the bidding process, any remaining funds in contingency or general condition accounts are returned to the homeowner at the conclusion of the contracting project.

10) More Experience

It’s absolutely essential that the person working on your residence is an experienced professional. With a general contractor, you’re able to build a personal relationship with the person responsible for overseeing your project’s success. I liked that you talked about how a general contractor will save you money. We have been thinking about remodeling our house, and of course, we can not match the prices that a contractor gets on the material. We will get in contact with a general contractor to see what our options would be.

I never realized general contractors would be preferred sellers since they develop trusting relationships with suppliers in the industry and therefore can get materials on request. My husband and I are wanting to renovate our kitchen this summer, but we’re worried it might be a little extensive and run the risk of being delayed into fall weather. Knowing contractors have ways of streamlining the process is very reassuring! We’ll have to look for a great design team and contractor in our local area. Thanks for the information!

I liked that you said that one thing to consider when you are thinking about having a custom home built is to hire a contractor who is experienced and will use good communication in order to provide you with the home of your dreams. I have been thinking about having a home custom built but I have been worried that I will end up with a contractor who will not be good at using communication to clearly explain the process to me. I will be sure to read reviews and ratings to find a reputable contractor that will help me feel comfortable with having them build my home for me.
