Taking something that was built a long time ago, maybe it doesn’t function to today’s standards, and trying to rework it within the space that you have. For example, stairways that look more like ladders, there’s a lot of creative ways to make those more user friendly – you can put what they call “winders” which are stairs that go around the corner, and different things with landings and just getting more creative in general. It doesn’t have to be a straight run of stairs.
Pictures are always great – Everybody knows there is a million picture out there of everything you can think of . I ask what they’re looking for and then do they have any pictures that get them excited. Anything that can help draw me in to their way of thinking or how they’re thinking. Pictures help you get a feel for what they are looking for and how to incorporate some of that stuff into their existing home. Everybody jokes about Pinterest and how everything is on their and there is all this cool stuff, but Houzz has a lot of pictures that are more specifically geared towards home and construction.
My personal favorite is a storybook cottage with steep roofs and curves. Rounded front doors, little nooks, and cozy spaces. They are probably the hardest to work on however, as curves often equal frustration and these projects can get a little spendy when you’re trying to bend wood around corners and make custom things like cabinets that have curves in them. I think its the intrigue of whats behind that door and whats in that little window up there.
