In this post, we’re going to show you some ways that we updated a 1930s home by finding that perfect combination of old and new to help this homeowner love the one they’re with.
This home has a double hung window, which uses a weighted pulley system to open and close. Sure, not as convenient as a regular window, but there is no denying that it adds character to the home. So, instead of getting rid of it, we worked on updating the area around it to create a more modern aesthetic while not getting rid of the character of the window. We added a brand new cabinet underneath with new countertops, as well as new trim around the window to incorporate both new and old together. A new furnace can also help combat any of the functionality of older windows.
For one of the doorways in the home, we had a custom made door with a beautiful design that looked classic, while still incorporating modern features. On top of this, we were able to find a 1940s backplate for the doorknob that was exactly the same as the one of the previous door. Once again, a perfect illustration of classic details meeting new, modern features.
One problem many people with older homes face is finding the same materials to go along with features that they don’t want to get rid of. For example, in this home, they have beautiful, original wood flooring that they didn’t want to replace, but also wanted to extend into the kitchen. Well, we went on a little search for wood flooring that was as close as possible as the original and we actually got extremely close. So close in fact, that it is impossible to tell the difference. Even though they aren’t exact matches, we were once again able to incorporate new with old seamlessly.
With another vintage window, this one located in the bathroom, we kept just about every feature, including the original lock. However, we then modernized the rest of the bathroom by adding new countertops, large windows, and a gorgeous walk-in shower.
