Wire Staircase Railing (You Know You Want This)

In another installment of “You Know You Want This,” Josh shows us his new “baby” as he would say, a hand-crafted wire railing!

Can Wire Railings Look Modern?

Wire, or cable railings, are often seen outside on boardwalks, decks, steps, but this design is very modern and works fantastically for this home interior staircase. The thin cables create a virtually see-through railing, keeping your foyer to your home open, and giving the illusion of more space. It creates a safe railing for split level homes without taking away from a modern appeal.

How Did We Do It?

Josh grew up creating things with scrap metal and welding tools and jumped at the opportunity to custom build this metal frame. He used a saw to cut down long pieces of metal into the proper size, then welded the joints together to create the railing posts. To go with this modern look, he used connections called cable bullets to install the wire, which gives it a nice clean, sleek look. A stained, finished wood handrail completed the look and looks beautiful in this space.

What Are Wire Railings?

Wire railings are generally 3 ft in height, with 3 to 5-foot gaps between posts. The cables can be vertical or horizontal but are a great alternative to basic spindled, glass, or even mesh railing infill. To ensure safety it’s important to make sure the wires or cables are tensioned properly. A loose wire can be hazardous and also take away from the aesthetic of your railing. The bullet tensioners we used for the wires are great, and screw into the post being virtually invisible. We love their sleek look!
