It’s hard to know where to begin when you embark on designing a new home. In fact, the process itself can get quite overwhelming. But, it should also be an exciting time, in that you get the opportunity to create a home that will be perfectly attuned to yours and your family’s needs.

Today, we’re going to talk about 8 areas of home construction design that you should follow to help make creating your dream home easier.

Establish and Consider Your Budget

Some people are frugal spenders while others… not so much. The best way to go about designing your home is to make sure that you establish your budget early on. Before you even decide where you want your home to be built, have a ballpark number that you want to stay within for the total cost of your home. While yes, there will be variables that will make it difficult to exactly pinpoint how much the cost will end up being, if you keep your budget in mind when making each decision, you will feel much better about the end result if you stay within your means.

Check Local Zoning Laws

Save yourself any frustrating headaches by checking ahead of time about the local zoning laws of where you plan to construct your new home. Zoning laws cover everything from how long your fence can be to whether or not you need a full acre of land to even build a house.

Decide on Your Type of Home

While maybe you already know that you love cabin-styled homes and that is the design you want your new home to be, you should still consider other models and the their own attributes. Each home has pros and cons relative their own style. Do you like the traditional, simplistic nature of a colonial style home, or is it a bit too cookie cutter for your liking? Is a ranch style a good fit, or would you prefer some upper levels to your home? Or, is that log cabin home design really a good fit with your old furniture, or will you have to buy costly, more personalized furniture to accompany the wooded style? Carefully consider each style, and in the end, go with the one that feels best for you and your needs.

Prioritize What You Value the Most

Are you going to need a lot of space for your big family? Or will you soon be an empty nester and can afford to lose some of that volume with your new home? If this is your first home, consider not going too big, especially if you have a small family. While extra space can be nice, you will find that you’re not using certain areas of the home as much as you thought.

How about the kitchen? Many newly constructed homes have beautiful, personalized kitchens. If you value your time cooking more so than say, your time watching TV, then allocate more of time and your budget towards your kitchen than the living room. Consider what makes you happy when you’re in a home, what rooms you spend the most time in, and what you ultimately consider brings the most value to a home.

Keep in Mind Function (as Well as Looks)

Sometimes you can get so carried away by the looks of your construction design, that you neglect the functionality of your new home. Make sure that you have access to rooms, closets and cabinets and that even after you place furniture in your home there will be no barriers to going where you need to. Even if a design looks good on paper, consider looking at it from the perspective of it being a fully furnished home and if you have enough room for everything.

Be wary of doors that open into other doors or that block hallways around them once they are open. Watch out for cabinets or dishwashers that can’t be accessed or used as they are intended without leaving the doors open and blocking access to adjacent cabinets.

Plan for Expansion

Just because your family is small now, doesn’t mean it will be in the future. If you have some extra space on your lot or property, you don’t have to build their immediately. Stay within your budget at first, and maybe a few years down the road, you can expand on your home to fit any new needs that may arise.

Let your Creativity Flow With Interior Design

The interior design element of your construction should be the most fun part of the process. Now is the time to create a living space that embodies who you are and your personality. Have fun with it and don’t forget that if you don’t love it, an interior redesign is a pretty simple fix.
