Whether your family has grown too big, or you just have too much stuff, you’ve realized that your home needs a little more space to accommodate your lifestyle. With no desire to move, your alternative is a home addition

Adding a room to your home provides you with many benefits, and, with the help of a trusted professional remodeling and building company, the process can be stress-free. Once you recognize the need for an addition, follow these simple steps for turning your home into a more comfortable living space for your and your family.

Decide What Type of Room You Want to Add

Okay, so you know you need a new room addition to your home, but you still have to identify what type of room and where to put it. Before you reach out to a remodeling contractor, you should have at the minimum these two criteria filled out. However, you should have a general idea of the layout and design features you have in mind. These don’t have to be set in stone, but once you meet with the contractor/designer, they’ll at least know your design preferences and what you have in mind.

Contact a Remodeling Company for a Consultation Meeting

The consultation meeting that you set up with the remodeler will ultimately help you work out those last few details of your dream room. This meeting will be fairly in-depth and detailed, as the remodeler will sit down with you and talk about your style for the room, and what you’re looking to accomplish with your new room and what uses you hope to get out of it. Basically, what the goals are for your addition. Remember, the plans you come up with from this meeting won’t be set in stone, as a designer will still have to draw up a layout for you and if there are any changes you want to make, you can do so before the building starts getting underway.

Establish Your Budget

establishing a budget for home remodeling

At the end of your consultation meeting, the contractor will work with you to establish a budget for your room addition. This is helpful for the designer, who can than create a layout that will fit within this budget. If you don’t have an unlimited budget, make priorities for which details are must-haves, and which details you can afford to live without. That way, you know that the resources you are spending on this new room will go towards the most significant aspects of your new room.

Work Alongside the Designer to Design the Perfect Space

The designers will create a blueprint for your room. However, that doesn’t mean that you don’t get a say in the final project outline. The designers will come to you and ask how the blueprint looks, and don’t be afraid to offer suggestions or make tweaks if it isn’t perfect. At this point, once the blueprint is finalized, the builder will get to work and there isn’t any turning back after that point. So take the time to make sure every detail is exactly how you want it.

Hard Numbers Estimate from Contractor

Once you’ve approved the design plan, the contractor will come to you with a hard numbers estimate. If the estimate is over budget and you aren’t willing to pay that much, you’ll have to alter the blueprint to get rid of some of the details that aren’t needed as much. If the estimate is lower than your budget, then you can revisit any of the details that you got rid of earlier and see which ones you can now add and still fit the project into your budget.

Construction Phase Begins

Once you give the all clear for the estimate, the building will start! Before the first hammer is nailed, make sure to discuss reaffirm any timelines previously discussed. While the timelines are usually rough estimates in terms of completion dates, it’s good to know whether your contractor is on time, which will help you decide if you want to use their services again in the future. A good contractor will update you consistently on the status of your project, and if they are not, then make sure that you are checking in with them often.
