Hey folks! Welcome back to another episode of “In the Truck With Josh.” Today, we will focus on the importance of an accurate estimation, especially when it comes to remodeling projects.
Hopefully, when you get to the point of considering a remodel you’re doing your due diligence and trying to find a reputable contractor who has good reviews and who you will mesh with.
When deciding which contractor to go with, you should focus on more than just their personality and body of work, but also their style for finding estimates.
Some contractors will simply hear that you want a kitchen remodel and then give you a number right away. It’s a quick, extremely rough estimation that isn’t really rooted in any factual information but is really just a trick to try and win your project.
They don’t really get into the specifics of what you really want. Personally, I would have a hard time doing this because I really like to understand what it is the homeowner wants, what the function is that they’re trying to attain with the new space, and what materials they are interested in using. The more information I know, the more accurate I can be with an estimate. So it’s really important for a contractor to ask you what you really want and to dig into the details.
A better understanding of the details will lead to the design — which is a crucial step in terms of the success of the project. Having a concrete outline of the design will help you work through your budget and define what is possible and what details would take additional funds.
If you work with a contractor who isn’t asking enough questions early on, that’s a red flag. You won’t get a real price estimate, but rather a number that is wildly inaccurate.
