For our second installment of the Wrong Way, Right Way we’ll discuss how to waterproof your shower before installing your tile and grout.
In the past, I’ve been called out to multiple homes where there has been a stain on the ceiling on their main level and a master bathroom above the stain. Sometimes the homeowner doesn’t make the connection, but many times the stain is related to that shower above it.
A common myth that many folks believe is that the tile and grout are what keeps the water from leaking out of the shower. Although this helps, these days your shower should be 100% waterproof before you put up a single tile.
If there is a crack on a tile or in the grout, then the water will get through and potentially create mold underneath the shower. Yikes!
Most homeowners won’t even notice any cracks before it’s too late. By that time, there will likely be structural damage and the plywood will get so water-logged that it will basically turn to compost.
If it gets to that point, a huge can of worms will be open and you’ll have to make some pretty expensive repairs within your bathroom.
How to Install a Shower the Right Way
If you want to avoid that awful situation, then you need to utilize a complete system while installing your shower.
In the video, you’ll see that with this shower we have GoBoard with a waterproof covering installed, which the tiles will go on top of.
All the screw holes and seams will be covered with a sealant to keep water out.
On the bottom of the shower, we’ll place a foam tray — which is plenty strong to handle the wear and tear of everyday use.
On top of this foam, a waterproof membrane is installed to keep water away from the floor. All of these details put together will help you avoid any pesky stains on your ceilings.
Don’t Cut Corners With Your Home
When it comes to your home, you shouldn’t take any shortcuts. In fact, while you may save some money when cutting those corners during the installation — 2-5 years down the road, you’re likely to run into some costly repairs.
